BC Wheelathon set for Sunday, June 10, 2001

$47,000 raised last year

June 7, 2001 - BC Wheelchair Sports Association's largest annual fundraiser will take place Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. The annual BC Wheelathon 2001 begins at 9:00 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. The 2000 Wheelathon raised $47,000 with over 500 participants.

Teams of 10 participants take turns wheeling in a relay format around the track at Swangard Stadium. Team members solicit lump sum pledges based on participation, not on the number of laps wheeled around the track. The wheelchairs are provided by BC Wheelchair Sports.

The money raised from the Wheelathon goes towards programs and services for wheelchair athletes including equipment, clinics, competitions, coaching, junior camps and athlete development.

Everyone is welcome to participate - adults and kids, able bodied and people with disabilities.

The day includes a complimentary barbecue lunch for participants, music and entertainment, fun and games and great prizes.

Several athletes will be participating in the event including Paralympians Marni Abbott (Vancouver-wheelchair basketball), Jaimie Borisoff (Vancouver-wheelchair basketball), Yuka Chokyu (Vancouver-wheelchair tennis), Kelly Smith (Vancouver-wheelchair athletics) and James Treuer (North Vancouver-wheelchair basketball). Also competing will be James Saunders (Vancouver-wheelchair rugby) and Sarah Hunter (Vancouver-wheelchair tennis).
