Wheelchair Tennis athletes Thomas Venos and Mitch McIntyre recently represented Team Canada at qualification tournaments for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup (The Davis Cup of Wheelchair Tennis).

Thomas Venos of Anmore competed with the Men’s Team at the Americas Qualifier in Lima, Peru. Venos and fellow Canadian Shawn Courchesne (Ontario) finished in 4th place, picking up victories over Peru and Guatemala.

Vancouver’s Mitch McIntyre attended a mixed Asian and Americas Qualification Tournament in Thailand with the Canadian Quad Team alongside teammates Rob Shaw and Hisham Mohammed (Ontario). The Canadians got off to a strong start, winning their opening match with Korea, and battled through injuries and adverse conditions to finish in 4th place.

BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Coach Sarah Hunter was also busy at the World Team Cup Qualifiers, taking the lead of the Canadian Women’s Team as captain (coach). Working with Anne-Marie Dollnar (Ontario), Natalie Lanucha, and Frederique Berube Perron (Quebec), Sarah coached the team to a semifinal berth and fourth-place finish.

Though none of the three Canadian teams advanced to the World Team Cup, these tournaments were a fantastic opportunity to compete, learn, and improve early in the 2024 international calendar.
