People with physical disabilities in Kelowna will have a chance to try a variety of wheelchair sports for free when BC Wheelchair Sports Association hosts a Have a Go event on May 23rd. The event will take place at Okanagan Mission Secondary from 5 – 8 pm.
“Have a Go Days are a great opportunity for people to try wheelchair sports in a fun, supportive environment,” said BCWSA Executive Director Gail Hamamoto. “We are thrilled to be able to show people with disabilities in the Okanagan what opportunities are available to them.”
All equipment, including sports wheelchairs, will be provided and no experience is necessary. Participants will have a chance to try wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair athletics and wheelchair tennis. People with physical disabilities are encouraged to bring their friends and family members to take part.
Hamamoto said that people are often nervous to try wheelchair sports, but BCWSA staff and athlete mentors will ensure that everyone feels comfortable.
“It’s always hard to try a new sport, so we try to make it fun and easy,” she said. “Even if you have no experience, even if you only want to play recreationally, come out and give it a try.”
