Barry Henderson named Tennis Canada’s Most Improved Athlete

Barry Henderson’s outstanding 2019 season has been recognized by Tennis Canada! The talented athlete has been honored with a Tennis Canada Excellence Award as the country’s most improved wheelchair tennis player.

The Mission resident enjoyed a meteoric rise up the ITF World Rankings this past season moving up more than 150 spots and posted strong domestic results by finishing 3rd in Men’s Singles and claiming a Doubles title at the 2019 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Montreal.

He also had the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2019 BNP Paribas World Team Cup Americas Qualifier where he finished 3rd alongside Team BC teammate and Doubles partner Thomas Venos.

A pair of BC-based wheelchair tennis coaches also received Coaching Excellence awards for their work with Canadian wheelchair tennis athletes.

Tony Illescu of Great-West Fitness and Tennis Club in Abbotsford and Rosie Schiach of Global Fitness and Racquet Centre in Kelowna were recognized for their work with Barry Henderson and Rob Shaw respectively.

BC Wheelchair Sports congratulates Barry, Tony and Rosie for their accomplishments and commitment to wheelchair tennis.
