Planned Giving
Leave A Legacy
Leave a lasting legacy and help change lives through sport. By making a plan to leave a legacy gift, you can leave a long-lasting impact on the BC Wheelchair Sports community.
Why Should You Leave A Gift In Your Will
- Make a lasting difference in the lives of those living with physical disabilities
- Ensure that you leave a gift that reflects your personality and values
- Increase the impact of your charitable gifts
- Leave an inheritance at a lower cost, often eliminating the taxable impact on your beneficiaries
- Reduce income tax and avoid capital gains tax
The most common form of legacy giving is through a bequest of cash or a percentage of your estate as defined in your will.
You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy gift. A gift of any size makes a significant difference to athletes with disabilities. A financial planner is the best person to help you decide which type of gift is most advantageous for you.
Why Make A Will
Making a will gives you control. If you don’t have a will, you lose the ability to determine who benefits from your estate and by how much. A well-planned estate can also maximize the bequests you wish to leave. Think about how you wish to share your assets between family, friends and your community. What is important to you? What kind of change do you hope to see in the world and how can you help? Planning a gift in your Will is the best way to leave a legacy that reflects your values and impacts the future.
It is always a good idea to discuss your wishes with your family and loved ones. You should consider who you want to act as your Executor(s)* as they will be responsible for ensuring that your wishes are carried out. Working with a financial planner is also very helpful to determine your best options for tax purposes and charitable giving, and a lawyer or a notary public can help prepare and file your will.
*an Executor is a person named in a Will and appointed to carry out the provisions of that Will.
